Summary
-------

This file provides information about the Madge DMI workstation
management agents.

The Madge DMI workstation agent supports all Madge Smart Ringnodes.

This file has the following sections:
   1) What is DMI
   2) Operating Requirements
   3) Installing MADGEDMI for DOS/WINDOWS
   4) Unloading MADGEDMI under DOS/Windows
   5) Installing MADGEDMI for OS/2
   6) The information that MADGEDMI makes available to you

1) What is DMI?
---------------
DMI (Desktop Management Interface) is a specification defining the
interaction of manageable 'components' within a desktop system.
'Components' can be any software or hardware entity in a computer, for
example, a LAN adapter. The benefit of DMI is that, through a single
interface, many different components can be managed, as long as they
conform to certain rules. It is the responsibility of each component
vendor to write an agent that can provide status, configuration and
management information to DMI compliant applications.

The DMI specification is developed by the Desktop Management Task
Force (DMTF).This is a consortium of leading companies in the computer
industry. Madge is active within this group and has played a leading
role in the development of the LAN Adapter MIF 1.1 - the standard set
of information that a LAN adapter supports. The Smart Ringnode DMI
Agent (MADGEDMI) implements this standard for the entire family of
Smart 16/4 products.

2) Operating Requirements
-------------------------
To use MADGEDMI, you need the following:

* The Madge Smart LAN Support Software.

* OS2/DOS/Windows Service Layer (available from a number of management
  application vendors including Intel).

* Either 8k of DOS memory, or 6k of DOS memory and 7k of XMS memory
(XMS memory is usually provided by a memory manager) (This does not
  apply to the OS/2 agent)

3) Installing MADGEDMI for DOS/WINDOWS
--------------------------------------
The following instructions assume that you have installed the DOS/
Windows Service Layer on your computer. To install MADGEDMI:

1 Change to the directory where the MADGEDMI agent software is stored.

2 Type "install <zone>" where <zone> is the current time zone,
represented as the number of hours ahead of GMT/UCT. For example:

        Location zone
        ------- ------
        Los Angeles -8
        New York -5
        London 0
        Tokyo +8

**********************************************************************
Note: These instructions assume that you have installed the Service
Layer. If you haven't, then you must also include the path to
the Service Layer. Typically this is C:\DMI. (This path will
locate the Service Layer executable SL.EXE in
C:\DMI\DOS\BIN). A sample command line is:

      INSTALL -8 C:\DMI
***********************************************************************

3 INSTALL.BAT then installs the following files onto the computer:

        MADGEDMI.EXE
        MADGE.OVL
        MADGE.MIF

4 At the end of the batch file on the computer that loads the adapter
   drivers, add the following line:

        %DMIDIR%\dos\bin\madgedmi

(The environment variable DMIDIR is set by the Service Layer
   installation).

**********************************************************************
Note: If you do not have the Service Layer installed, add the line:

        <directory>\dos\bin\madgedmi

Where <directory> is the path that you gave to INSTALL.BAT.
**********************************************************************

5 The next time that the Service Layer loads, MADGE.MIF will be
installed with the Serice Layer. You will then be able to use DMI
to manage the Ringnode in your computer.

**********************************************************************
Note: For MADGEDMI to load, you must have an adapter driver loaded.
**********************************************************************

4) Unloading MADGEDMI under DOS/Windows
---------------------------------------
To unload MADGEDMI, type:

  MADGEDMI unload [ENTER]

5) Installing MADGEDMI for OS/2
-------------------------------
Copy the MADGEDMI.DLL and MADGE.MIF files to the directory containing
the Service Layer Binary files (e.g. C:\KARATCA\DMI\BIN). If this
directory is not C:\KARATCA\DMI\BIN, edit the MADGE.MIF file
accordingly.

6) The information that MADGEDMI makes available to you
-------------------------------------------------------
The LAN Adapter MIF that MADGEDMI supports, provides a rich set of
information about your Ringnode and its driver software. For example:

* The IRQ, DMA channel, and I/O locations that the Ringnode uses.

* The addresses that the adapter card uses.

* The number of frames that the Ringnode has transmitted and received.

* The number of bytes that the Ringnode has transmitted and received.

* The name and version of the network driver and also the protocol
  that it supports.

* The type of Ringnode, its part number, serial number, and a
  technical support phone number.

* The remote boot protocol supported by the Smartrom (if you have one
installed on your Ringnode) and the boot options that it is
configured to support (for example, whether booting from floppies is
  allowed).

* The Smart II Software protocol and interface modules that the
  Ringnode has loaded onto it.
