Smart II Software parameters: Host parameters
=============================================

                                               -----------------------
1 Introduction
--------------

This document describes those parameters that affect the operation of
all the interfaces you enable, on all of the Ringnodes in your
workstation.

If you are using SMART.CFG to configure your Smart II Software, then
all of the host parameters must appear at the top of the [HOST]
section.

If you are using the command line, then the host parameters can appear
anywhere on the command line.

Table 1 gives a list of all Host parameters. Apart from two exceptions
all host parameters can be used in SMART.CFG. A full description of
each of the parameters is given in Section 2.

2 Host parameters
-----------------

This section describes the Host parameters. Abbreviations are given
for those parameters that can be shortened.

LOAD.HIGH Loads SMART.EXE into the upper memory area with
DOS version 5.0 (or later). You cannot load the
software into the upper memory area if you are
                    loading it from CONFIG.SYS.

Do not use the DOS command DEVICEHIGH, in
CONFIG.SYS, to load the Smart Software into the
                    upper memory area.

                    Abbreviation: HIGH

WINDOWS Specifies the version of Microsoft Windows that
you are going to run. It is important that you
                    specify the version number correctly.

If you are using DMA, the WIN parameter ensures
that DMA communications between your Ringnode and
host PC are copied through a buffer in
conventional memory (see also LOMEM in the
                    SMTCARD.TXT file).

                    Range : 30 or 31 (for windows 3.0 or 3.1)
                    Default : none
                    Abbreviation: WIN

                    Example : WIN=31

FORCELOAD Forces SMART.EXE to install a protocol onto a
Ringnode that is currently active. FORCELOAD stops
and then restarts the Ringnode. Any activity you
are using the Ringnode for terminates. (Your
                    existing network connection is lost.)

This parameter is required for remote booting
workstations because, when you load the Smart II
Software onto a remote-booting workstation, the
                    Ringnode is already active.

Note: this parameter does not allow SMART.EXE and
		    any protocols to be reloaded.

                    Abbreviation: FL

VER Displays the version of SMART.EXE.

NOT.PCI Use this parameter if you are using an non-PCI
Ringnode, and the combination of your version of
EMM386 and PCI-BIOS causes your machine to fail
                    when Smart Software loads.
NOTE: You must upgrade your version of EMM386 if
you want to use Madge PCI Ringnodes.

DISPLAY Displays information about your Ringnode (or
Ringnodes) and the protocols it is using. The
information is displayed while the protocols are
loading. The display includes information about:
the node address, I/O location, ring speed,
transfer method, and protocol modules that each
Ringnode in your computer is using.

CONFIG Displays information about your Ringnode (or
Ringnodes) and the protocols it will use. The
information is displayed without the protocols
being loaded. The display includes information
about: the node address, I/O location, ring speed,
transfer method, and protocol modules that each
Ringnode in your computer is configured for.

PC3270 Ensures that IBM Personal Communications 3270
version 1.00 or version 1.01 operates correctly
                    with your Smart 16/4 Ringnode.

If you are using IBM Personal Communications 3270
version 1.01, specify: PC3270=101. For version
                    1.00, specify: PC3270=100.

Do not use the PC3270 option for other vendors'
                    3270 communication programs.

                    Range : 100 or 101 (for v1.00 or v1.01)
                    Default : (none)

                    Example : PC3270=101

PCLAN.RPL Use this parameter for remote-boot via PC-LAN.

                    Example : PRPL

LAN.MANAGER.RPL Use this parameter for remote-boot via Microsoft's
                    LAN MANAGER version 2.0.

                    Example : MRPL

LAN.MANAGER.2.1 Use this parameter for remote-boot via Microsoft's
                    LAN MANAGER version 2.1.

                    Example : MRPL21

LAN.SERVER.RPL Use this parameter for remote-boot via IBM's LAN
                    SERVER versions pre-dating version 2.0.

                    Example : SRPL

LAN.SERVER.2.0 Use this parameter for remote-boot via IBM's LAN
                    SERVER version 2.0.

                    Example : SRPL20

LAN.SERVER.3.0 Use this parameter for remote-boot via IBM's LAN
                    SERVER version 3.0.

                    Example : SRPL30

ONE Ensures that software is only installed on a
single Ringnode. You can use this parameter with
the FORCELOAD parameter, if you want to download
software onto a single Ringnode, without
disrupting other Ringnodes in your computer.

PATH Enables you to specify a working directory for
SMART files. If you do not use PATH, SMART.EXE
searches for the Smart configuration file and
protocol modules in the directory in which it is
running. The PATH command is included in the Smart
                    command-line as follows:

                    SMART [path=<PATH>]

                    Default : directory of SMART.EXE

                    Example : SMART IPX PATH=C:\MADGE

CFG Enables you to specify the name of a configuration
file. If you do not use CFG, SMART.EXE searches
for a file called SMART.CFG. The CFG command is
included in the Smart command-line as follows:

                    SMART [cfg=<FILENAME>]

                    Default : SMART.CFG

                    Example : SMART CFG=IPX.CFG

COLOUR Causes the display from the Smart II Software to
appear in colour, not in monochrome.

                    Abbreviation: COLOR

                    Example : SMART IPX COLOUR
