Madge Smart 16/4 Fiber Ringnodes are designed to meet the IEEE's 802.5j trial use standard. Although not a fully-approved standard, the purpose of this IEEE document is to enable manufacturers to produce fiber-optic token-ring products that can operate with those of other manufacturers.

The draft standard is based on 62.5/125um fiber, and Madge Smart 16/4 Fiber Ringnodes are optimized for use with this type of fiber. However, there are alternative fibers that you can use.

We recommend you to use 62.5/125um multimode graded-index optical-fiber (compliant with the IEC 793-2 type A1b) with your Ringnode.
