Card Services

Madge Card Services

Note: The Madge Card Services software provides a DOS or OS/2 Card Services interface exclusively for the Madge CardBus Adapter or the Smart 16/4 PCMCIA Ringnode. If you load Madge Card Services, you cannot use any CardBus or PCMCIA adapters produced by other manufacturers.

The software in your computer that configures PC Cards, including the Madge CardBus Adapter, is called Card Services. Most portable computers are supplied with Card Services already installed, and we recommend you to use the Card Services supplied with your computer. However, if the computer was not supplied with Card Services installed, or if you need support only for Madge PC Cards, you can use the Madge Card Services software instead.

Most standard Card Services software requires you to load another piece of software called Socket Services separately. By default, the Madge Card Services software for DOS requires you to have Socket Services loaded already. However, if your PC contains one of the CardBus controllers that MADGECS supports (see below), then you can configure MADGECS to emulate Socket Services. (If you do this, you do not need to load a separate Socket Services.) The Madge Card Services software for OS/2, on the other hand, will not work if you have third party Socket Services installed. To run it, you must remove any third party Socket Services. Also, MADGECS for OS/2 will only work if your PC contains one of the CardBus controllers listed below.

The CardBus controllers supported by MADGECS are:

  • Texas Instruments PCI1130 CardBus controller.
  • Texas Instruments PCI1131 CardBus controller.
  • Toshiba ToPIC95 CardBus controller.
  • Cirrus Logic CL-PD6832 CardBus controller.

Note: MADGECS also supports Intel-compatible PCMCIA controllers. If you are using the Smart 16/4 PCMCIA Ringnode and your PC contains an Intel-compatible PCMCIA controller, you can configure MADGECS to emulate Socket Services.

The Madge Card Services software for:

  • DOS is called MADGECS.EXE. If your computer contains one of the CardBus controllers supported by MADGECS, then you can use MADGECS even if you do not have Socket Services installed. To do this, you must specify the /ESS command-line option (or the emulate_socket_services=yes configuration file option) when you run MADGECS.

  • OS/2 is called MADGECS.SYS. If your PC contains one of the CardBus controllers supported by MADGECS (see above) then MADGECS provides a Socket Services interface as well as a Card Services interface for the adapter. If your PC does not contain one of the CardBus controllers supported by MADGECS, then you cannot use MADGECS.

Note: For more information about replacing Card and Socket Services, see MADGECS.TXT. (When you have finished reading the topic, click on the browser's back button to return to this screen.)

Note: For a list of command line options that you can use with MADGECS.EXE, type MADGECS /? [ENTER]
