The Windows 95 Driver
=====================
                                               LSS 5.0(0), August 1996
                                               -----------------------

Summary
-------

This file describes advanced configuration and troubleshooting
of the MDGMPORT.SYS driver under Windows95.

Section 1) Advanced Configuration
---------------------------------

If required, there are a number of advanced configuration options for
Madge Smart adapters that you can set. To do this, choose the Networks
option from the Control panel. Highlight the Madge Smart adapter in
the components list select Properties, then click on Advanced.

You will see a list of options that you can set. The options are
described below. Once you have finished setting option click on OK
and then again on OK in the Networks dialogue box.

Options:

Force 16Mbits
-------------
The token-ring speed the adapter works at is normally configured by
using either the "Madge Wizard" utility to program the adapter, or the
DOS TRCFGC.EXE utility to program the adapter, or by setting switches
on an older adapter. This option allows you to force the adapter to
work at 16 Mbps.

Force 4Mbits
------------
The token-ring speed the adapter works at is normally configured by
using either the "Madge Wizard" utility to program the adapter, or the
DOS TRCFGC.EXE utility to program the adapter, or by setting switches
on an older adapter. This option allows you to force the adapter to
work at 4 Mbps.

LAA
---
Normally a token-ring adapter uses an address that is stored on the
adapter. You may set a different, locally administered address, with
this option. The address must be a 12 digit hexadecimal number in the
range 400000000000 to 7fffffffffff.

Maximum Frame Size
------------------
This option allows you to set the maximum sized frame that the adapter
will send or receive.

Transfer Type
-------------
On some adapters it is possible to use one of several different ways
of transferring data between the computer and the adapter. This option
allows you to choose which method to use.

Force 16 Bit PIO
----------------
Normally when PIO is chosen as the transfer method MDGMPORT will
attempt to use 32bit programmed I/O on adapters that support this
mode. On some old or out of specification computers you may experience
problems with 32bit PIO. This option allows you to force MDGMPORT to
use 16 bit programmed I/O.

Alternate
---------
Some computers have slightly different bus timings to most others. If
you experience any problems with a Smart 16 Ringnode try setting this
flag to "Yes" so that the Smart 16 Ringnode knows to use the different
timing scheme.

Watchdog
--------
Normally MDGMPORT closes down a Smart Ringnode when instructed to do
so by the operating system. Under almost all circumstances this is
the correct behaviour. However, if the computer should "hang" the
Smart Ringnode will not be closed down until the computer is powered
off or hard reset. To get around this problem insert the word
"Watchdog" into the registry and give it a non-zero value. This causes
the Smart Ringnode to automatically closedown if the computer does not
respond for the specified number of seconds. A value of 15 seconds is
recommended.

Section 2) Troubleshooting
--------------------------
If you start Windows95 and a message appears saying that your Madge
Ringnode is not working then you must start an MSDOS session and
enter the command:

    TYPE C:\WINDOWS\NDISLOG.TXT

Where C:\WINDOWS is the directory in which you have installed
Windows95. You will see some text like:

Madge Smart ???? Ringnode (0001). Error Code = AAAAAAAAAA, ....

The file ERRORS.TXT explains what each value of AAAAAAAAAA means.

Section 3) Hardware Initialization Error Codes
----------------------------------------------

If the adapter fails to start because of a hardware initialization
problem. Then the PP and QQ values can be used to determine why the
hardware failed to initialize.

Some of the common errors are explained in the file ERRORS.TXT. If
the QQ displayed in your installation does not match any of the
values listed in ERRORS.TXT, contact MADGE technical support. Quote
the values for PP and QQ.
