Description

Introduction

The Madge Smart 16/4 PCMCIA Ringnode is a Token Ring adapter for use in the PCMCIA / PC Card slots of portable computers. With support for the latest Plug 'n' Play operating systems, this adapter provides a quick and convenient way to connect mobile users to the corporate LAN.

The PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) has defined the PC Card as a general-purpose expansion slot that accepts credit-card sized adapters. PC Card slots are found in almost all notebook computers and increasingly on energy-saving "Green" PCs which demand low power consumption.

As with all Madge Token Ring network products, the Smart 16/4 PCMCIA Ringnode is fully compliant with the IEEE 802.5 Token Ring standard. It can be freely mixed with any other Token Ring vendor's adapters.

High LAN performance for a notebook PC

The Smart 16/4 PCMCIA Ringnode provides performance comparable to an internal ISA-based Token Ring adapter. This makes it significantly faster than alternative notebook connectivity options, such as an external parallel port adapter or a PC-to-PC serial link.

Powerful LAN support software

The adapter is supplied with Madge's Smart LAN Support Software; a complete set of drivers and utilities for all Smart 16/4 Ringnodes. This includes a range of host-resident Fastmac Plus drivers for highest performance, and Madge's unique adapter-resident Smart Software for multi-protocol flexibility.

With 512KB on-board memory, any combination of ODI, NDIS, LLC, NetBIOS, IPX or TCP/IP protocols can be downloaded concurrently, offering significant DOS memory savings over other driver configurations. Support is also offered for the latest Client-32 drivers which give further DOS memory configuration options.

Increased convenience for mobile users

Madge's Smart LAN Support Software provides maximum functionality for mobile users to operate in both networked and stand-alone modes. Features such as Hot-swap allow users to connect or remove a PCMCIA adapter without the need to re-boot and Dual docking configurations enable users to use a PCMCIA adapter when undocked and a docking station resident adapter when docked.

PC Card solutions program

As part of its commitment to product quality and multivendor interoperability, the Smart 16/4 PCMCIA Ringnode has been certified as a Premier PC Card within Compaq's PC Card solutions program. A Technical Support Alliance Agreement also exists between Compaq and Madge.
