Using the IBM 3270 Emulation Program - Installation hints

Read this file in conjunction with the IBM 3270 Emulation Program System Planner's and User's Reference.

The IBM 3270 Emulation Program requires you to set token-ring adapters to specific IRQ settings. For details of how to adjust the IRQ setting of your Ringnode, refer to the on-line installation guide of your Ringnode.

  • For workstations running the 3270 Emulation Program and PC LAN or other networking software, load the network software before the 3270 Emulation Program.

  • For 'Network Station workstation' or 'standalone' types of operation, switch your Ringnode to use IRQ2 or IRQ3 (these correspond to the 'Primary' and 'Alternate' settings on IBM Token-Ring adapters).

  • For 'gateway' operation, select an IRQ that does not conflict with any SDLC, 3278/79 Emulation, or other adapters installed in your computer:
If you have an SDLC Adapter fitted, try IRQ2 for communication with the host computer.
If you have a 3278/79 Emulation adapter fitted, try IRQ3 for communication with the host computer.
If you are using token ring to communicate with the host, and you have fitted two Smart 16/4 Ringnodes to your gateway, you have the following IRQ options for each Ringnode :
Ringnode set to communicate with Host : IRQ2, IRQ3 or IRQ7 Ringnode set to communicate with LAN : IRQ2 or IRQ3
If you also require the Smart IPX interface, then specify the IPXO=N parameter. This prevents the IPX interface from automatically opening the Ringnode at load time. Make sure that you load the 3270 Emulation Program before you load Novell's NetBIOS, NETX or VLM.
