Several 3270 software packages allow you to use IPX/SPX protocols for communication between your gateway and 3270 workstations. This configuration is popular amongst users of Novell NetWare. We recommend the Smart IPX interface for 3270 workstations set up in this way.
You may need to increase the maximum number of SPX connections available to your Smart IPX interface if you are installing it on a gateway computer. Each 3270 workstation typically requires one SPX connection. By default there are a maximum of 32 SPX connections available when you enable a Smart IPX interface. If you set up a gateway that is connected to more than 32 workstations, increase the CONNECTIONS parameter as shown in the example below:
