Installing the SCO OpenServer 5.0 Driver

Installing the SCO OpenServer 5.0 Driver

This section describes how to install drivers for Madge Smart Token-Ring adapter cards under SCO OpenServer 5.0.

Note: The installation of this driver has been updated in the LSS 5.0(2) release.

The driver is called MTOK and when installed correctly can be found in /etc/conf/pack.d/mtok. You must carry out the following installation procedure, after installing the SCO operating system. This driver is designed for all Madge Smart token-ring adapter cards except the Madge PCMCIA card.

Before installing the driver, create an installation disk. To do this:

  1. Copy the file mdgsco5.img found on the Madge CD into a temporary directory on your hard drive.

  2. Insert a blank formated 3.5 inch floppy in the floppy drive. In the temporary directory, enter the following at the command prompt:
    dd if=mdgsco5.img of=/dev/fd0135ds18
This creates a custom installable version of the driver on the floppy disk.

To install the driver:

  1. Insert your installation disk in Drive a: and log on as 'root'. Run the custom utility from the command prompt by typing custom. The custom utility lists the software installed on your computer.

  2. Select Software from the menu bar.

  3. Select Install New.....

  4. Choose your own computer to install from.

  5. Insert the installation disk in your disk drive and select continue at the next prompt.

  6. Select FULL installation. The driver files are copied to the hard disk. When this is complete the software list now includes 'Madge driver supplement'.

  7. Select Exit from Host on the menu bar.

  8. You now need to configure the adapter card(s) in your computer. Run netconfig from the command prompt.

  9. Select the Hardware menu and choose Add new LAN adapter. Netconfig searches your compter and displays the first adapter card found.

  10. Select continue to configure this adapter card. Unless specified otherwise, You must use the default configuration values presented by netconfig. The option to install IPX/SPX or TCP/IP on the card is displayed.

  11. Select one of these options and again unless specified otherwise, use the default configuration values. The list of hardware will now include the adapter card you have just installed. If you only have one adapter card in your computer, proceed to step 14. Otherwise, select Add new LAN adapter again from the Hardware menu. The netconfig utility will find the same card as last time.

  12. Use the tab button select Configure hardware not listed above.... This will produce a list of adapter cards.

  13. Select the next adapter card you want to install. The software searches for and configures the adapter card.

  14. Exit from netconfig and re-link the kernel. The driver is now installed.
