Installing the AIX 3.2 driver for the IBM RISC System\6000

Installing the AIX 3.2 driver for the IBM RISC System\6000

You can use two types of Madge Smart Ringnodes in the IBM RISC System/6000 running AIX 3.2. These are the Madge Smart 16/4 MC Ringnode and the Madge Smart 16/4 MC32 Ringnode. The driver for these ringnodes is called MTOKDD. The following instructions describe how to install the driver software.

The following instructions assume you are installing the driver under AIX 3.2.5. Under different versions of AIX 3.2.x, the installation is similar. However, the wording of some smit utility options may differ.

Before installing the driver, create an installation disk. To do this:

  1. Log into your AIX system as root.

  2. Copy the mdgaix32.img file from the Madge CD into a /tmp directory.

  3. Place a blank formatted 3.5-inch disk in drive A: and enter the command:
    dd if=/tmp/mdgaix32.img of=/dev/fd0

This creates a installable version of the driver, MTOKDD, on the floppy disk.

To install the driver:
If you are upgrading from an earlier version of the driver, you need to first de-configure the existing version of the driver before carrying out the following instructions. If you are installing the driver for the first time, proceed with the following instructions:

  1. Run the smit utility whilst logged in as root and select the following screens in sequence:

    Software Installation & Maintenance

    Install / Update Software

Install / Update Selectable Software (Custom Install)

Install Software Products at Latest Available Level

You are prompted for the name of the device containing the software to be installed.

  2. Insert the MTOKDD installation disk into your floppy-disk drive.

  3. Enter the following: /dev/fd0

  4. Press [Enter] or select Do. You are prompted for the name of the software to install.

  5. Enter mtokdd (in lower case) and press [ENTER] or select DO.

  6. Click on OK. The installation process will now begin.Once the installation process has completed, the driver software is installed.

  7. You need to configure the driver software for use with a Smart Ringnode.
