Installing the AIX 4.1 driver for the PowerPC

Installing the AIX 4.1 driver for the PowerPC

You can use several types of Madge Smart Ringnode under AIX 4.1 on the PowerPC. These are:
ISA bus:
  • Smart 16/4 AT Ringnode
  • Smart 16/4 AT Plus Ringnode
  • Smart 16/4 ISA Client Ringnode
  • Smart 16/4 ISA Client Plus Ringnode
  • Smart 16 Ringnode
  • Smart 16/4 ISA Client PnP Ringnode
  • Smart 16/4 AT PnP Ringnode
  • PCI bus: Smart 16/4 PCI (BusMaster) Ringnode

The driver for these ringnodes is called MTOKDD. The following instructions describe how to install the driver software.
Since AIX 4.1 does not include support for ISA Plug and Play configuration, you must set the Smart 16/4 ISA Client PnP and Smart 16/4 AT PnP Ringnodes to non-Plug and Play mode using the PNPENABL utility found on the Madge CD-ROM.

For Smart 16/4 AT Ringnodes and Smart 16/4 ISA Client Ringnodes you must know the hardware configuration options the Ringnode has been configured to use. That is, the bus I/O address, the bus interrupt level, and for AT Ringnodes, the DMA Level.

Before installing the driver, create an installation disk. To do this:

  1. Log into your AIX system as root.

  2. Copy the mdgaix41.img file from the Madge CD into a /tmp directory.

  3. Place a blank formatted 3.5-inch disk in drive A: and enter the command:
    dd if=/tmp/mdgaix41.img of=/dev/fd0

This creates an installable version of the driver, MTOKDD, on the floppy disk.

To install the driver:
If you are upgrading from an earlier version of the driver, you need to first de-configure the existing version of the driver before carrying out the following instructions. If you are installing the driver for the first time, proceed with the following instructions:

  1. Run the smit utility whilst logged in as root and select the following screens in sequence:

    Software Installation & Maintenance

    Install / Update Software

Install / Update Selectable Software (Custom Install)

Install Software Products at Latest Available Level

You are prompted for the name of the device containing the software to be installed.

  2. Insert the MTOKDD installation disk into your floppy-disk drive.

  3. Enter the following: /dev/fd0

  4. Press [Enter] or select Do. You are prompted for the name of the software to install.

  5. Enter mtokdd (in lower case) and press [ENTER] or select DO.

  6. Click on OK. The installation process will now begin.Once the installation process has completed, the driver software is installed.

  7. You need to configure the driver software for use with a Smart Ringnode.
