Installing the Solaris 2.4/x86 Driver

Installing the Solaris 2.4/x86 Driver

The driver supports following adapter cards:

Smart 16/4 AT Ringnode/Bridgenode
Smart 16/4 AT Plus Ringnode
Smart 16/4 ISA Client Ringnode
Smart 16/4 ISA Client Plus Ringnode
Smart 16/4 ISA Client PnP Ringnode (in non-Plug and play mode)
Smart 16/4 EISA Ringnode/Bridgenode
Smart 16/4 MC Ringnode/Bridgenode
Smart 16/4 MC32 Ringnode/Bridgenode

Before installing the driver, create an installation disk. To do this:

  1. Log into your SCO UNIX system as root.

  2. Copy the mdgsol24.img file from the Madge CD into the /tmp directory.

  3. Place a blank formatted 3.5-inch disk in drive A: and enter the command:
    dd if=/tmp/mdgsol24.img of=/dev/fd0

This creates a installable version of the driver on the floppy disk.

    To install the driver:

Insert your installation disk in drive A: and whilst logged on as "root" enter the command:
    pkgadd -d /dev/fd0

Follow the instructions described in the Solaris installation documentation.

Binding TCP/IP protocol stack to the Madge mtok driver

Once you have installed the driver, you will need to bind a networking protocol stack to the mtok driver. To bind the TCP/IP protocol stack to the mtok driver carry out the following steps:

    1. In your /etc directory, create a file called hostname.mtokx. Where 'hostname' is the name of your Solaris 2.4 system and 'x' is the instance number of the Madge adapter being bound. For the first Madge adapter you would name the file 'hostname.mtok0', and for the second adapter you would name the file 'hostname.mtok1'.

    2. In the hostname.mtokx file just created, enter the name you wish other systems to use to refer to your system. This must be different to your host name. For example, if your host name is 'helios' you could use the name 'helios_ip'.

    3. In the file called 'hosts' also in the directory /etc add an entry that associates an IP address with the name you placed in the hostname.mtokx file in step 2. For example, if the host name is 'helios' and its IP address is to be 123.123.123.123 then the entry might be:
      123.123.123.123 helios_ip

    4. Re-boot the Solaris 2.4 system.
