Remote booting from Novell NetWare

Remote booting schemes for DOS workstations

Novell NetWare supports two booting schemes for DOS workstations: NetWare Remote Reset, and Remote Program Load. For information about configuring your Smartrom for the booting scheme you require, see the Enabling and configuring your Smartrom section

If your Smartrom is configured for Remote Program Load, perform the following steps before you install the drivers for your workstations:

  1. Load and bind the Novell file RPL.NLM, on your NetWare server.

  2. Copy the Novell file RBOOT.RPL to your server's SYS\LOGIN directory.

  3. If required, make an entry for each workstation in the BOOTCONF.SYS file on your NetWare server.

For details, refer to the Novell Remote Program Load for NetWare manual.

NoteWorkstations that use NetWare Remote Reset or Remote Program Load, automatically remote boot across source-routing bridges.

Boot-image files for DOS

Creating a boot-image file for a NetWare server involves creating a bootable DOS disk containing all of the files required for booting. Include on the diskette any Madge driver that provides an ODI or IPX interface.

To create the boot-image file from the diskette, run the Novell DOSGEN utility. To perform these operations, follow the instructions in your Novell documentation.
NoteIf you are using NetWare Remote Reset and you want to load an ODI driver, you must run Novell's RPLODI.COM program, before running your ODI driver, and before running the NetWare shell program.

If you are using NetWare Remote Reset or Remote Program Load, you must run Novell's IPXODI.COM driver after running your ODI driver.

For more information, see Using Madge ODI drivers to remote boot from NetWare servers.
