Remote booting from IBM LAN Server version 3.0 or version 2.0 for OS/2 version 2.x workstations

Remote booting from IBM LAN Server version 3.0 or version 2.0 for OS/2 version 2.x workstations

This section tells you how to configure IBM LAN Server version 3.0 or 2.0 so that workstations fitted with Madge Smart Ringnodes can remote boot OS/2 version 2.x.

Before reading this section, follow the instructions for installing OS/2 RIPL in the IBM LAN Server Network Administrator Reference: Planning and Installation manual.

The following instructions are for Remote Booting OS/2 version 2.1. If you wish to remote boot OS/2 version 2.0 then replace all references to OS221 with OS220 and to DEFALT21 with DEFALT20.

1 Copy MDGND.DOS, the Madge DOS NDIS driver, from the Madge release disks into the directory C:\IBMLAN\RPL\DOS (if you haven't already done so for DOS RIPL support).

2 Copy MDGND.OS2, the Madge OS/2 NDIS driver, and MDGND.NIF from the Madge release disks into the directory C:\IBMLAN\RPL\IBMCOM\MACS.

3 Stop the RemoteBoot service (if it is running) by using either the NET STOP RPL command or the LAN Requester full-screen interface.

4 Go to the directory C:\IBMLAN\RPL and copy the file OS221TR.CNF to OS221MG.CNF.

5 Edit the new OS221MG.CNF file to look like the example shown below.

; OS/2 Boot Block for Madge Smart Ringnodes
RPL DOS\RPLBOOT.SYS
DAT DOS\MFSD20.SYS
ORG 1000H
LDR OS2.21\OS2LDR ~ OS2LDR UFSD.SYS MFSD20.SYS
DAT DOS\UFSD.SYS
DAT C:\IBMLAN\DOSLAN\LSP\DXM.MSG
DAT DOS\MADGE\OS2RIPL\PROTOCOL.INI
EXE C:\IBMLAN\DOSLAN\LSP\NETBIND.COM ~ ~ ~
DRV C:\IBMLAN\DOSLAN\LSP\DXMJ0MOD.SYS ~ 14 ~
DRV C:\IBMLAN\DOSLAN\LSP\DXMA0MOD.SYS ~ ~ ~
DRV DOS\MDGND.DOS ~ ~ ~
DRV C:\IBMLAN\DOSLAN\LSP\PROTMAN.DOS /I: ~ ~
Sample OS221MG.CNF file

6 Create a new subdirectory C:\IBMLAN\RPL\DOS\MADGE\OS2RIPL.

7 Copy the file C:\IBMLAN\RPL\DOS\TOKENRNG\PROTOCOL.INI into C:\IBMLAN\RPL\DOS\MADGE\OS2RIPL. (If you don't have a C:\IBMLAN\RPL\DOS\TOKENRNG directory then use the C:\IBMLAN\RPL\DOS\PROTOCOL.INI file instead.)

8 In the directory C\:IBMLAN\RPL\DOS\MADGE\OS2RIPL edit the file PROTOCOL.INI to look like the example shown below.

[PROTMAN_MOD]
DriverName = PROTMAN$
[DXMJ0_MOD]
DriverName = NETBEUI$
BINDINGS = MADGE_MOD
[MADGE_MOD]
DriverName = MDGND$
PIO = YES
Sample PROTOCOL.INI file

9 In the directory C:\IBMLAN\RPL edit the file RPL.MAP and add the following line into the section for server record entries (note that the line has wrapped but that it doesn't contain any carriage returns).

yyyyyyyyyyyy OS221MG.CNF 3 10 N ~ OS2~2.1~MADGE~SMART ~ ~ ,,, ~ R_21_MDGSMT ~ ~

10 In the directory C:\IBMLAN\RPL, edit the NDISDD.PRO file by adding the following line at the end: MDGND.DOS MADGE

(Some versions of LAN Server do not use this file. If you have no NDISDD.PRO file, proceed directly to Step 15.)

11 Create a directory called C:\IBMLAN\RPL\IBMCOM\MADGE.

12 Copy the contents of C:\IBMLAN\RPL\IBMCOM\TOKENRNG into the new directory C:\IBMLAN\RPL\IBMCOM\MADGE.

13 Edit the files C:\IBMLAN\RPL\IBMCOM\MADGE\CONFIG.20 and C:\IBMLAN\RPL\IBMCOM\MADGE\CONFIGRI.20 by changing the lines:

DEVICE=Z:\IBMCOM\MACS\IBMTOK.OS2

to: DEVICE=Z:\IBMCOM\MACS\MDGND.OS2

14 In the directory C:\IBMLAN\RPL\IBMCOM\MADGE edit the PROTOCOL.INI by changing the line:

DRIVERNAME=IBMTOK$

to: DRIVERNAME=MDGND$

Delete any lines between DRIVERNAME=MDGND$ and the section after it (or the end of the file). Note that each section starts with a square-bracketed driver name, for example, [LANDD_NIF].

15 Copy the file C:\IBMLAN\RPL\FITS\DEFALT21.FIT to

C:\IBMLAN\RPL\FITS\SMART.FIT.

16 In the directory C:\IBMLAN\RPL\FITS, edit the file SMART.FIT. Use the editor's search-and- replace facility to replace references to DEFALT21 with SMART.

17 Go to the directory C:\IBMLAN\RPL\MACHINES. Create a new subdirectory called SMART and use the command: XCOPY DEFALT21 SMART /S/E

to copy the contents of the DEFALT21 subdirectory into the new SMART subdirectory.

18 Edit the files C:\IBMLAN\RPL\MACHINES\SMART\CONFIG.20 and C:\IBMLAN\RPL\MACHINES\SMART\CONFIGRI.20 by changing the lines:

DEVICE=Z:\IBMCOM\MACS\IBMTOK.OS2

to: DEVICE=Z:\IBMCOM\MACS\MDGND.OS2

19 In the directory C:\IBMLAN\RPL\MACHINES\SMART, edit the file PROTOCOL.INI by changing the line:

DRIVERNAME=IBMTOK$

to:DRIVERNAME=MDGND$

Delete any lines between DRIVERNAME=MDGND$ and the section after it (or the end of the file). Note that each section starts with a square-bracketed driver name, for example, [LANDD_NIF].

20 Go to the C:\IBMLAN\RPLUSER directory. Create a new subdirectory called SMART and use the command:

XCOPY DEFALT21 SMART /S/E

to copy the contents of the DEFALT21 subdirectory into the new SMART subdirectory.

21 Update your OS/2 RIPL access control profiles by using GETRPL.

22 Start the RemoteBoot service by using either the NET START RPL command or the LAN Requester full-screen interface.

You can now create, update, or delete OS/2 RIPL Requester definitions for your workstations by using the LAN Requester full-screen interface. (From the menu bar, select Manage Machine Parameters.) For more information, refer to the LAN Server Network Adminstrator Reference manuals.

When you are creating an OS/2 RIPL Requester definition:

  • Use R_21_MDGDTK as the Server Record Indentifier.

  • Use FITS\SMART as the File Index Table to model.
