Using SMARTROM.EXE to configure the Smartrom

Before configuring your Smartrom.

NoteTo make SMARTROM.EXE write to the Smartrom any changes you require, include the /WRITE option on the command line. If you have a password set, whenever you use the /WRITE option, you are prompted for your password.

To inspect the current configuration of the Smartrom, type: SMARTROM /LIST [Enter]

RUN SMARTROM.EXE by typing SMARTROM [options] [Enter] at the prompt.

If the Ringnode is password protected, SMARTROM.EXE prompts you for a password.


Changing Smartrom images

To download a different Smartrom image (or to update the Smartrom image with a more recent version (for example, a version from the BBS), use /ROM_FILE=<image> on the command line. You can specify: MULTI, NRPL, or NW. For example: SMARTROM /ROM_FILE=NRPL /WRITE

Default booting schemes

To specify a booting scheme for the Smartrom to use by default, include /DEFAULT=<scheme> on the command line. The schemes you can choose are:

(If you don't specify a booting scheme, the Smartrom prompts for one each time the computer boots up.)

Specifying a server to boot from

To specify a server for NetWare Remote Reset to use, include /SERVER_NAME=<server> on the command line. By default, NetWare Remote Reset uses the first NetWare server that it finds. (Only specify a server for NetWare Remote Reset.)

Specifying a boot image

To specify a boot-image file for NetWare Remote Reset to use, include /IMAGE_NAME=<name> on the command line. By default, NetWare Remote Reset uses NET$DOS.SYS. (Only specify a boot-image file if you are using NetWare Remote Reset.)

Timed-out prompts To enable a timed-out prompt that allows the workstation user to choose a booting scheme other than the default, include /TIMER on the command line with /DEFAULT = <scheme>.

Disabling booting devices

To prevent workstation users from overriding (under any circumstances) your prohibition on local booting, include /SECURE on the command line. Otherwise, if for example, the server is not available, they can:

NoteIf your workstation has a configurable Startup Sequence (on IBM PS/2 computers this is part of the Set Features menu), configure the order of booting from there instead of by using SMARTROM.EXE. Once you have configured the Startup Sequence, run SMARTROM.EXE with /RPLAWARE included on the command line (/NODISKETTE has no effect if you put /RPLAWARE on the command line). This prevents the Smartrom from taking control of booting until the Startup Sequence finishes.

Enabling/disabling Promiscuous Mode

To enable Promiscuous Receive Mode include /PROMRX on the SMARTROM.EXE command line.

To disable Promiscuous Receive Mode, run SMARTROM.EXE without the /PROMRX option.

To ensure that no unauthorized users can re-enable Promiscuous Mode (to run network analyzers), protect your Ringnode and Smartrom with a password.
